Studying your GCSE
Biology is a diverse and ever evolving subject. Biology has helped us understand everything from the human body to the natural world and climate change.
But for everything we know, there’s so much more to discover, such as immunology and evolution.
Studying Biology, either on its own or complementing another course, will help you to build your knowledge of the subject and how it applies to the world around us.
It will also give you the opportunity to study Biology at A Level and beyond.
The course covers everything from genetics, cell biology and the immune system through to evolution, reproduction, health and the environment.
Upon completion of the course you will have developed your knowledge and understanding of Biology, including key theories and principles. This will enable you to progress to further study such as A Level or an Access to Higher Education Diploma.
Getting Started
learndirect is a leading UK distance learning institute. That means we specialise in supporting our students to learn in a way that suits them. So, no classes or restrictive timetables.
This allows you to complete your GCSE in Biology in a way that works best for you, at a time and place of your choosing.
We trust you to fit your studies around your commitments in order to complete the course. The only specific deadline to work towards is your exam – exam sittings are held once per year in May or June.
You can start learning from the moment you have enrolled on the course. We don’t have term times, just an online portal with all your course material ready and waiting.
That means you can get your GCSE in Biology as quickly as you choose.
You will have a dedicated tutor to support you throughout so you can ask questions and get help as you go. They will also be the one who marks your assignments so they can provide you with personalised feedback. This will allow you to make steady and continual improvement throughout the course.
Pursuing your career
A GCSE in Biology allows you to go on to study either at A-level or complete RQF or an Access to HE Diploma. All of which can enable you to go on to study Biology at degree level.

During your studies you will cover the following modules:
- Introduction to Science
- Cell Biology
- Organisation
- Infection and Response
- Bioenergetics
- Homeostasis and Response
- Inheritance
- Variation and Evolution
- Ecology
Great news! There are no entry requirements for the course. You will need access to a computer or tablet and an internet connection.
*You will have access to the course for 12 months only. You can purchase course extensions here.

At the end of each unit you will find a Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA). This is completed online and submitted to your tutor. Once assessed your tutor will return your work complete with its final grade and feedback. Once you’ve successfully passed each assignment you’ll be ready to take your exam!
If you decide to take the GCSE exam at the end of this course and pass, you will have gained a GCSE in Biology. This will enable you to progress to further and higher education programmes.
